Congona Festival had its ignaugural edition on July 11th in Folkets Park, Malmö, marking the first event in Scandinavia dedicated exclusively to cumbia. The festival was organized as a collaborative effort between Wakan Tanka Prod and Hamaka Latinamerikansk Förening, aiming to establish a dedicated platform for cumbia and its diverse stylistic evolutions.

Event Overview and Cultural Significance

Malmö, the host city, is a multicultural hub in Scandinavia. The festival was designed to provide a cultural experience, incorporating live musical performances, dance showcases, workshops and an international market featuring food and craft vendors. The event’s objective was to bridge this traditional Latin American rhythm with the contemporary Scandinavian music scene.

Programming and Artistic Direction

The festival’s program provided a comprehensive journey through the evolution of cumbia. It spanned from its traditional roots to modern electronic fusions. This curation ensured an inclusive representation of the genre, showcasing both historical depth and contemporary innovation.

The lineup featured performances by El Cumbión, a Colombian dance troupe, alongside Tambó. They offered a recreation of the traditional Colombian “rueda de tambores,” focusing on the authentic execution of traditional cumbia rhythms. Cumbiasound, a cumbia project Mode-in-Malmö, presented a special live show prepared for Congona Festival. The artistic direction also prioritized intergenerational and intercultural collaborations. Examples ate the sets by 70-year-old Peruvian DJ Espe, who curated a selection of recognized cumbia classics. Also, the integration of emerging Swedish talents DJ Idyllic and DJ Vyncnt from Fryshuset, both of whom were introduced to the genre through this festival platform.

The headliner of this inaugural edition was El Hijo de la Cumbia, the pioneering electronic cumbia project from Argentina. The project performed in a 7-piece full band format, presenting a cumbia dub show that demonstrated the genre’s versatility in a modern live context.

Looking Toward Future Industry Impact

As the first edition of its kind, Congona Festival established a baseline for niche cultural programming in the region. The focus remains on promoting cumbia and world music fusions in the region. Also offering artists new platforms and opportunities to present their projects.
