Last week, I had my first WOMEX experience representing Wakan Tanka Prod. It was an incredible few days, and I truly believe this event is a great investment for any professional navigating the world music business. This includes producers, managers, bookers, artists, and everyone in between.
I must confess that I felt completely lost before the event. I had no idea where to start or how to act! However, I survived to tell the tale. I want to share my experience and essential tips with others considering attending the next edition in Gran Canaria in 2026.

What is WOMEX?
WOMEX, or World Music Expo, is the most international and culturally diverse music meeting in the world. It’s a major trade fair for the global music scene, combining a bustling trade show, showcase concerts, a dedicated conference, and film screenings. It’s where the world music industry connects.

My Experience at WOMEX
I had an amazing time at WOMEX! I learned a lot, made new contacts and possible collaborators, and even made what I consider can be new friends. Really at home! The WOMEX team is incredibly welcoming and makes you feel at ease the entire time.
The most impressive part of WOMEX for me was the showcases. In a single night, you can listen and dance to an average of more than ten different genres and styles of music. You’ll see artists from all corners of the globe. For a person who loves high-quality, diverse music, that is a luxury difficult to find anywhere else.
WOMEX also made me feel more confident in what I do: I met people in the exact same situation and with similar goals. It’s truly nourishing to hear about other people’s experiences and points of view.

Essential Tips for First-Time Delegates
If you’re heading to Gran Canaria in 2026 for your first WOMEX, follow these practical steps to get the most out of the experience:
- Don’t miss the Orientation. Make sure to attend the “Orientation for New Delegates” conference session. It usually takes place on the first day, first thing in the morning. This will not only guide you on what to do during and after the event, but you’ll also be able to meet other first-comers right away.
- Go to Networking Sessions. Attend as many networking sessions as possible. For me, these were very important to get quick tips and make important contacts for the future.
- Prepare Your Meetings Early. Some weeks before WOMEX, check the delegates list and contact via email the people who you find related to your project. Try to schedule meetings before the event. This way, you can arrive with a somehow organized agenda.
- Be Prepared (But Pack Light!). Attend all meetings on time. Bring your business cards and any relevant information about what you want to present (flyers, CDs, stickers, etc.). Just keep in mind that people are traveling with restricted luggage space.
- Don’t Say No. If someone contacts you before the event interested in scheduling a meeting, don’t deny it to anyone. Even if their project has nothing related to what you do at first sight, you never know what might come up in the future.
- Share Your Journey. During WOMEX, take a lot of pictures and share them with the world. Communicate that you are at WOMEX! Use your social channels to share the excitement.
- Take Care of Yourself. This might sound silly, but it is important: bring comfortable clothes, drink a lot of water, and don’t forget to eat. There are so many things going on at the same time that you can easily lose track of time.
- Follow Up is Key. After the event, keep in touch with the people you met. Send them all the relevant information that you agreed upon. Remember that you will most likely be meeting them in similar events again!
